AVAZ received one of the highly coveted three-year grants, Multicultural Advancement, from the CAC, as well as a Next Generation grant.
Dr. Anthony Shay was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his "Immeasurable Contribuition to Dance" by the California Arts Council at the
Lester Horton Gala Award Ceremony
at the Japan America Theatre on April 7, 2002.
Jamal is a recipient of the James Irvine Foundation Dance Maker Award
On April 7, 2002, AVAZ was awarded a Lester Horton Award for Oustanding Achievement in Company Performance for the second time.  Jamal was also awarded a Lester Horton for Outstanding Achievement in  Costume Design for the third year in a row.

To commemorate the victims of the September 11, 2001 attack, a group of dancers and dance makers from all over Southern California gathered to perform a ritual dance, "Funeral for a Fallen Hero" a six-minute dance drama choreographed by Jamal. The event, open to the public, took place at noon on Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at the Plaza of Japan America Theatre Cultural Center, 244 South San Pedro. The dance drama was performed simultaneously in San Jose, California, St. Paul, Minnesota, San Diego, California, and Salt Lake City, Utah. To see a video of the piece click here.
